T-Shirt Silk Screening with Renegade Apparel

On May 10th we headed down to Renegade Apparel with two terrific designs produced by SKDB students.   Myles Conner, Owner/Operator and entrepreneur, showed us all how to make a screen and then screen and set the ink.

Letterpress Printing

Once again Jeff Macklin of Jackson Creek Press, who is also the owner/entrepreneur of “Prevail Media” provided us with a terrific hands-on workshop in letterpress printing.  We printed on a 100 year-old letterpress and discussed how similiar the invention of the printing press is to the invention of the World-Wide Web. In both cases information became accessible to the masses, maybe not all people but many.  Jeff moves between old mediums and new media with no problem, he’s highly proficient at both.

Toronto Trip 2018

Lunch at the POW WOW Café, a walk through Kensington Market and down to “Graffiti Alley” the home of Rick Mercer’s famous rants.  A tour of the many galleries and spaces at 401 Richmond Street, we did it all.

Above: 401 Richmond Street where students followed some yoga moves featured in this series of videos, looked at some large format still life paintings and visited “City Builders” lab.

401 Richmond Street houses a wide variety of galleries, not for profit artists, designers and organizations.

“City Builers”, or Park People support and mobilize people to help them activate the power of parks to improve quality of life in cities across Canada.

Sir Sanford Fleming College

A visit to Sir Sanford Fleming College today proved to be highly insightful. The new Trades Center and facilities are ginormous and focus on hands on training.  Each facility gives students an opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge and experience.  SKDB students also toured the Graphic Design spaces; Police Foundations (which included a jail cell); Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning and were given an overview of college pathways.
